Pokeweed plant is considered toxic and poisonous, unless you are an herbalist or knowledgeable about using it. You wouldn’t want to pick and eat poke berries.

Now, lets see what the good and bad of each of them are. Poke berries are toxic. Birds love them and can eat them with no issues but they are toxic to humans.

Pokeberries are about the size of peas with a dent in each berry. Elderberries are about the size of a bb. This is Poke…notice the Poke berries hang in a long thin cluster as opposed to Elderberry’s umbrella-like clusters. Also, the stems of Elderberry are thin and woody with brown flecks on them.

Despite their somewhat similar appearances, elderberries and pokeberries are not related. They come from different plants that have two separate origins. While Poke and Elder plants both produce white flowers followed by dark purple berries, Elder berries are tiny, like a bb, while Poke berries are about the size of peas with a dent in each berry.

How does the elderberry differ from the pokeberry? The two berries do have a similar color and some similarities in appearance, but they are far from identical. Elderberries are the smaller of the two and grow in loose clusters; pokeberries grow down the sides of their stems in bunches and each berry .
